Kool Science Event is the umbrella site for fund raising activities in support of the Thomas A. Edison Kiwanis Regional Science Fair, Reading Rocks, Bringing Up Grades (B.U.G.) and other community projects for children. All proceeds will go to the Fort Myers Kiwanis Foundation, our 501c3.
The science fair is tied in to the Edison Festival of Light celebration. It is a regional science fair that includes participation by more than 20,000 middle school and high school students in Lee and Charlotte Counties and culminates in awards of more than $900,000 in scholarships and the opportunity for the winners to compete in the Florida State Science and Engineering Fair and the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair with the potential to share in over 4 million dollars of awards and scholarships.
Fort Myers Kiwanis annually supports the Fair by providing volunteer staff support and fund raising to pay in excess of $15,000 for travel expenses of winners to the State and International competitions and for scholarships, trophies and other awards at the local level.
Bring Up Grades, or BUG is a program designed to provide recognition to students who raise their grades to an acceptable range, and maintain or continue to raise them from one grading period to the next. Recognition includes being placed on the school's BUG Honor Roll; a pizza, ice cream, or other food-themed party; and presentation of certificates, pins, and other giveaways.
Reading Rocks is aliteracy program for Kindergaten. Our members go into the classrooms to read to sthe students and give each student a copy of the book that was read.
